I’d go to camps, clinics, buy programs, and watch videos, hit the gym relentlessly and did whatever my various coaches “assigned” and half the time would be burnout, over trained, exhausted, and so frustrated – I’d often question if all the time, effort, money and stress was even worth trying to play sports at the next level…

That pain and frustration and failure, led me down a path to becoming a strength coach a few years later.

I was on a mission to make an impact physical development and human performance. But somehow I found myself running into the SAME DAMN Road blocks; My athletes were victims of horrible training – if you could even call it that – at school.

Coaches dishing out Grinder style conditioning that had absolutely ZERO carry over to the baseball field, forced to resort to spending hours on the mound drilling and taking lessons, and probably the biggest challenge, these kids had to play not just high school ball in the spring, but competitive ball during the summer and the fall just to “get on the radar.”

The reality is – they had virtually NO time to develop the strength, power and physical capacity to produce at a high level on the mound much less do so year round.

HOW TO ADD 10+ MPH TO YOUR ARM


But having a pretty deep interest in physics, and an understanding of biomechanics – my studies and research led me down some very rare rabbit holes in human performance; And it led me to the discovering something that literally resulted in me routinely adding multiple Miles Per Hour to Athletes arms – 4-7mph on average – and up to 10+ MPH on many – WITHOUT even touching a baseball, and I was doing it ALL from the weight room…

What’s more – These kids were adding lean mass like nothing I’ve ever seen, and they were not only throwing harder, but their command was un-real, and because they were getting so strong and powerful AND increasing joint performance and integrity at the same time, these guys were able to throw COMPLETE games without fatigue or dips in velocity… It sounds surreal, but this was consistent across guys from the ages of 13 all the way to Major Leaguer’s and I was doing it faster than anyone else.

Now it sounds easy on the surface – one little tweak and all of the sudden we have the most powerful training system for baseball to date – but it’s a VERY complex system of training; that said, I’m going to break down exactly what we do, and how we do it, but I want to warn you, you need to read every word from here on – because you need to grasp the details and the complexities of this system if you want it to work for you…

WHY BASEBALL IS SO FAR BEHIND THE "STRENGTH CURVE"


You see I had been educated – much like the other coaches in American strength & conditioning academia – around a system of training called linear periodization.

This system sounds great and logical on the surface – but it was truly faulty in the fact that it really blocked the year out into sections and relied heavily that an athlete has an actual “off-season” to train and progressively build off different periods or blocks of training…

But I quickly realized the body doesn’t really even work in this manner, and that my athletes – Baseball Players – rarely had periods where they could only train and not risk fatigue or over-training during season.

Another major issue was that as baseball athletes, we can’t just display physical traits like quality mechanics, flexibility, explosive power, strength or stamina – by themselves, we need to display all of these traits simultaneously or in CONJUNCTION with each other.

So training in blocks where we focus on just one thing at a time and then leave everything else out, just didn’t make any logical sense. That would be like me telling you, that you should only throw for 50% of the year, and then completely stop throwing for the rest of the calendar year. Would you expect to come back throwing with the same level of command and power?

Absolutely not – but someone came along in the baseball industry and made athletes and coaches and parents believe they should spend limited time training for the strength, power & athleticism required to throw and perform, and led them to believe they should only do so for a short amount of time each year – so they could spend more time (and money) showcasing the physical talent, they haven’t had any time to develop…

I won’t mention any names – but I can tell you this much – that guy has been responsible for more missed opportunities and torn UCLs then any other guy in history.

So what is the answer then?


Well I spoke about it a few seconds ago and it has to do with the term Conjunction – not the grammatical term, but the concept is very similar. It’s a system of Strength & Performance Pioneered by the Soviets and later Perfected by a legendary strength coach by the name of Louie Simmons – it’s called “The Conjugate System”

It works by conjugating the training for the different physical abilities different athletes are required to display when they perform, and it’s framed and guided by two very important sets of laws:

The Laws of Physics

The Laws of Physiology

This means, that everything we do in the weight-room when in training – is dictated first by the laws of gravity, and force, and velocity and how things move through the atmosphere we all live and compete in. This is important because gravity is what dictates how fast objects can move and how much force it takes to move those objects at given speeds.

The second set of laws that guides us, the Laws of Human Physiology, dictate the intensities and time periods in which we can train and challenge the body, to force neural and physiological adaptations (Changes in the Central Nervous System – what powers us, and Changes in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft-tissue – what enables us to move and create force and energy)

Basically this means the program is built around the way you (the body) will respond to the types of resistance, training Intensities and the Speeds at which we train (the physics) …

YOU MUST DEVELOP THE "SPECIAL STRENGTHS" FOR BASEBALL


It makes so much sense it’s almost unbelievable… But there’s a lot more than just the general concepts of physiology and physics that make it such a powerful system of training for the over-head athlete.

You see as baseball athletes we perform movements that require SPECIAL physical traits, things like:

MAXIMUM STRENGTH

Used to create the ground force required to drive you down the mound

MAXIMUM SPEED

Used to execute intricate mechanics at high velocities,

EXPLOSIVE POWER

To Transfer Energy from the Ground into the Baseball

BALANCE & STABILITY

To stay consistent and produce high levels of command and accuracy,

REVERSAL STRENGTH

Elastic Action that allows us to create “stretch reflex” or Stretch Shortening action where muscles can be stretched and then allowed to reverse their action producing more speed and power like in the wind up

These things are actually known as Special Strengths…


And they are specific to every sport and every position, because each position is responsible for moving at different rates of speed, and producing different levels of force and doing this at different mechanical positions.

This is why it’s so imperative that you train using a system that replicates the types of joints angles, strengths and speeds that are specific to you sport and your position.

The Force Velocity Curve


What the Conjugate system does is Analyze the exact way an athlete must perform on the field; and based off this analysis it allows us to build a system of training that uses different types of resistance, and different speeds of execution combine with different percentages of our Maximum strength.

This results in your body developing the EXACT types of special strengths (Forces and Velocities) that are necessary to perform on the mound at a CRAZY level.

But there’s more.

We know that the body has to be able to recover, and we know that you also have to be able to develop your skills and hone your technique – but how can you fit all this in? even if the training system is so complete and it’s perfectly matched to the demands of your performance on the mound, how could you possibly do this year round?

The Pendulum Wave


Because of something in the system known as “the Pendulum Wave.” This is the process of programming and managing two very important things over your training year:

Training Volume and Training Speeds; and Training Intensity and Forces.

This might be the most crucial piece of the entire program because it Systematically all but guarantees your body will be able to properly recover from EVERY training session and allows us to prepare your Central Nervous system to be at PEAK Readiness by the end of Each Week every Week of the Year…

It works because the body operates in biological cycles, and every 21 days, our body goes through kind of a reset period.

Because of this, our system progresses naturally with the body’s production of hormones and allows you to optimally recover from training… Here’s how it works:

MAX EFFORT

FORCE PRODUCTION (HORSE POWER)

In the first part of the week, we focus on Intensity, and Maximal Force Production – the top of that force velocity curve we discussed a second ago – which amplifies the CNS and challenges the body to Recruit New Motor Units or Muscle Fibers – it’s like super charging a car essentially letting us use MORE of the muscle mass we have and use it ON COMMAND by activating muscles that previously didn’t really ever fire

RECOVERY & JOINT FUNCTION

Then There’s a 72 hour Rest period where special Joint development and mobility training systems are used called FRC (Functional Range Conditioning) and special exercises to aid in the recovery of your body to help prime us for the next piece of the equation.

RATE OF FORCE (ACCELERATION)

The second part of the week after the CNS has recovered and progressed, we attack Explosive Strength & Speed Strength. Here we focus on higher speeds with less weight developing what’s called RFD (rate of force development) and train with higher volume to build more muscle mass where you need it most – the muscles that accelerate and transfer all the power… This is essentially your ability to accelerate explosively through your mechanics – and adds the MASS to the MASS=GAS equation…

By CONJUGATING these training focuses each week: we’re able to let the body recover more optimally from each training focus, and STILL Develop Technical Skills while peaking for Performances on the Mound and Living up to Expectations in the Bull-Pen.
